You’ll spot my whispy, anti-gravity titles at the beginning; I gave myself a crash course in using After Effects. I quite like this Production Designer business. I’m going to see if I can put together a music video for my next project.

Again, I helped team Me vs Googleplex whip up another fantastic 7 minute short for the V48 hours Film competition. Our genre this year was BioPic, and our talented writers wove a slightly magical tale of Sir Isaac Newton and the discovery of gravity. The weekend was amazing fun and we have an amazing bunch of people on our team.

In the photo above, our fantastic camera team Gareth and Sophie plot out the shots needed on our first day of shooting with Director Hans.

The gravity wranglers Sarah W, yours truly and Sarah FW, wearing out our poor limbs holding up particles for the title sequence.

Director Louis talks physics with Ike.

Come and see our entry on the big screen at the Civic Theatre, Auckland, Saturday 8 May. Tickets are available online at The Edge. The team consensus is that this is our greatest entry yet.

The latest in Aimee’s line up of imaginary suitors is Frank Chimero. He’s real, but his marriage proposal to me isn’t. Frank is a Portland-based illustrator, graphic designer, writer and general spunk in glasses and a plaid shirt. Typically working in editorial design and illustration for the likes of The New Yorker and Wired, Frank is also an active writer on design, creativity and in his own words “… thinking about what this world needs, what’s going on and how we can actively work to make it better… It’s a good life.”

I love Frank’s work because its freshness and humour stems from its simplicity and honesty. He is a pool of inspiration and someone who helps me remember that while graphic design should be a thoughtful profession, it doesn’t have to be a serious one.

From his Inspirational Design Poster series.

From the book 16 Ideas for Creatives.

In his blog, Frank posts questions people often ask him about his design process. How do get your lines uneven? Where do you get your inspiration? Your ideas? Each question he will answer with a tremendous amount of patience, but the bulk of them can be answered with this: “There are no recipes. Stop looking for a recipe for success. You want it? So far as I can tell, it is to relentlessly do what you’re best at, keep at it, and to keep moving and take advantage of opportunities.”

You will, never the less, be inundated with great advice and insight if you visit his blog or his other online writing project Thinking for a Living, a repository for thought-provoking design content co-curated by Duane King, Shane Bzdok and Ian Coyle.

Some shavings from his pencil of wit:

In personal work, optimism trumps experience.

To make pearls, you’ve got to eat dirt.

The process is the reward.

Clarity + Surprise = Delight

There are no secrets or shortcuts. Work hard.

“Wait, are you telling me they really released all of these bouncy balls down this big hill?” Yes I am. And if you have the choice, I think you should do it that way too.

Living the dream at Victoria Skate Park. More from my 99 Strangers project.

Victoria Park used to be home to a skate park before progress moved in and cleared the way for a motorway. I was lucky enough to spend one summer afternoon of my holiday there, hanging around the sidelines, hoping no one found my presence creepy. There were boys too young to buy beers drinking beers, too young to buy smokes chuffing on smokes. Golden girls with long beachy hair in summer dresses taking in the action. Late-twenties guys with BMXs absconding from the office for an hour or two to get in some jumps, dress jeans rolled up their calves. Eighteen year olds enjoying their last summer before embarking on university, exemplifying their youth with high fives and grazed elbows.

This is Sam. I’d probably say he’s living the dream spending down here at the skate park, where he says he’s spent most of his summer afternoons. I told him after watching them I was keen to try my hand at jumping. He reckons I’ll get the hang of it, but probably on someone else’s bike.

I lost your email address Sam, send me a message if you want a copy of the pics.
